Change in facial features is almost impossible to ignore, especially since your face is the first thing you look at in the mirror every morning. Why? Because you want to look beautiful, whether for yourself or the world around you. And a major change on your face is unacceptable. What causes a bump on lip?

Rather than going at a whole face, let us assume a change much smaller. Suppose your eye got infected (God forbid) and the swelling caused your eyes to shrink, making your face look bigger than normal. See how a single eye can ruin your beauty? The same goes for the other parts of your face, from which your lips are no exception.

What causes a bump on lip to form? What does it mean? What measurements can you take to cure them now, and what precautions can you take to avoid them in the future? Read to find out.

What is a bump on lip?

Before you freak out by a small bump that formed on your lip overnight, just breathe and relax for a moment to think about other possibilities. A bump does not always mean an everlasting scar that formed out of the blue to ruin your beauty forever. It could be a harmless pimple that will fade with time and before you know it, it will be gone.

What do they look like?

A lip bump may vary anywhere from a fiery red-toned flesh to a small bump noticeable only on close inspection. The way they look may help decide what caused them and how serious they might be.

What causes bumps on lips?

Bumps on lips may be caused by a number of different reasons. Some of them may form directly or indirectly because of what you do, and others may cause due to natural phenomena.

These causes may include:

Cold sores

The bumps caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) are small blisters filled with fluid that are itchy to the touch and white in color. We call these bumps cold sores. These bumps are viral and can easily transfer from one person to another.

How to cure them

Usually, cold sores clear up on their own within a week or two. You can increase the development and curing process by taking antivirals or applying creams.

Fordyce Spots

These small, white bumps can either form inside your mouth or on the outside of your lips. Depending on the severity of the infection, these bumps may form singularly or in clusters.

How to cure them

As the cause of these bumps is not known yet, there is no specific treatment one can take to cure them. Although they pose no threat to one’s health, the minimization of appearance can be done by either consulting a doctor or using professionally tested care cosmetics.

Oral Thrush

Also known as oral candidiasis, oral thrush causes an infection to form after the consumption of a specific kind of yeast called Candida. The yeast that is naturally present inside the mouth poses no such threat, however, if the amount increases, it can cause an infection to form bumps on the lips.

Symptoms of Oral thrush include:

  • White splashes and splotches form on the tongue
  • Corner of mouths begin to crack and redden
  • An uncomfortable sensation takes place inside your mouth
  • You lose your sense of taste
  • You feel pain while eating and swallowing

How to cure them

It is up to you to leave the infection to clear up on its own, which happens most of the time. If it hurts too much, you can take antifungal medications to kill the pain and speed up the healing process.

Allergic reactions

This usually happens with females. Why? Because most allergic reactions on the skin happen when a female applies chemicals such as cosmetics to their face and lips.

Cosmetics such as lipsticks contain titanium and other harsh chemicals that react with the skin. These reactions cause lips to swell and redden, but this reaction neutralizes after a while.

How to cure them

It is suggested to immediately wipe the makeup off your lips as soon as you feel irritation. It is better to apply a moisturizer on the lips or wash them with cold water.

And of course, avoid the makeup product in the future after complaining about it at the brand store.

Things to avoid when you have lip bumps

Once you are certain the bump on your lip was caused by reactions, avoid doing the following:

  • Do not touch or squeeze the bump
  • Cleanse your skin from time to time
  • Use lotions or moisturizers
  • Wipe off any makeup before going to sleep
  • Take medication

By following these measures, the bumps on your lips are sure to fade in no time.

When to visit a doctor?

Normally, lip bumps are not that serious. But if the bump gets too big and triggers an alarm, immediately visit your doctor, because a swollen bump might be an indication of cancer.

Other than that, visit your doctor if:

  • The bump on your lip starts to bleed
  • You have difficulty breathing
  • Your lip swells
  • It hurts too much
  • The bump has not healed even after a month
  • The bump has started to leak
  • You feel numbness around the bump

Concluding remarks

Lip bumps form naturally and heal naturally. As long the bump does not pose a threat greater than harming your beauty for a few days, there is nothing you have to worry about. Visit your doctor in case of emergencies.
